While staying with us rent a canoe/kayak and quietly paddle up Carry Brook, where you might see a moose, deer, bald eagle, osprey, otter or beaver, etc. .If weather permitting and calm waters, you may enjoy a canoe trip along the shoreline of Moosehead Lake. Go boating and see the lake' s beauty while fishing for brook trout, salmon and togue. (We sell maps of Moosehead Lake that depict the depths of the water).

Our playground area offers horseshoes, volleyball and badminton for the adults, and swings, teeter-totters, jungle gym, merry-go-round, and pirate ship for the children. Young children will especially like our sandy beach and shallow water for swimming. Also, children from ages 3 to 10 may enter our Mugsley the Moose coloring contest.

Did you know that during 1944 to 1946 there was a German prisoner of war camp at Seboomook?

HIKING

The Snowmobile Trail

From Seboomook Campground: Walk west on Seboomook Road for 1 1/2 miles; you will see a cabin on your right. A short distance after the cabin, take the snowmobile trail on your left. This hiking trail is approximately 1 1/2 miles to the top of the ridge that over looks the campground.

For a longer hike, take the trail on the right off Seboomook Road and you can go as far as you like. It goes all the way to Pittston Farm.

SEBOOMOOK DAM

In 1926 -27 the new concrete Seboomook Dam was constructed by Great Northern Paper Company and still stands today.

From Seboomook Campground: You may walk the 2.5 miles or drive. Travel west on Seboomook Road for a short distance and take the first right at our Mobil sign. Drive (or walk) 2.5 miles and the dam is on your left. You may park your vehicle and climb down to the large rocks below. Nice place to fly fish from the rocks or for a picnic lunch. Don't forget your camera and drinks !

History: At Northwest Carry (Seboomook), the West Branch of the Penobscot River comes very close to Moosehead Lake. A wooden dam was constructed at Seboomook Falls in 1913 and operated until 1927. A sluiceway for the passage of logs from the waters of the West Branch of the Penobscot River into the head of Moosehead Lake was dug from Carry Pond to the northwest inlet stream (Carry Brook) and was filled with water from a dam in Carry Brook.

Timber from the upper part of the West Branch was sorted by booms at Seboomook Dam then sluiced by conveyors through Carry brook and into Moosehead Lake where it could be boomed and towed down the lake to East Outlet. Then the logs were driven down the Kennebec River to lumber mills and manufacturing plants all along the Kennebec.

PITTSTON FARM

Pittston Farm is approximately 13 miles west from Seboomook Wilderness Campground and is located at the forks of the north and south branches of the great West Branch of the Penobscot River. In the summer beautiful flower gardens surround the main lodge, and animals such as goats, horses and lamas graze in the pastures nearby. Pittston offers an evening buffet in the main lodge and you may visit their museum and walk through their barn. A pleasant place to take small children.

From Seboomook Campground: Travel west on the Seboomook Road. After 9 miles the road forks, bear right and continue on for another 4 miles. You will see the Pittston Farm sign on your right. Turn in and bear left to go to the main lodge.

MOUNT KlNEO

Mount Kineo,  which is 1,789 feet above sea level is in the middle of Moosehead Lake. Its face thrusts 800 feet directly up from the shoreline, and is well known for its abundance of flint. Sitting as it does on the shore opposite of the small town of Rockwood, Kineo can be difficult to get to. The most direct way to Kineo is by boat. The Kineo Shuttle leaves every hour from the public boat landing in Rockwood. A small fee is charged to shuttle you to and from Kineo.

From Seboomook Campground: Travel west on Seboomook Road for approximately 13 miles, turn left before the sign to Pittston Farms, drive approximately to the Checkpoint Gate. After the checkpoint continue on that main road until you cross Moose River Bridge. Take a left onto Route 15 and go approximately 3 or 4 miles until you see the Rockwood sign (sets low to the ground on the left). Turn left and at the bottom of the hill, you will see the Rockwood boat landing. It is approximately an hour and 15 minute drive to the landing from Seboomook. You may launch a boat or you may take the shuttle at the landing (leaves every hour) across the lake to Kineo. Once at the Mountains face the hiking trail is about 2 to 4 miles round trip, and the trailhead begins at the Kineo landing. From the dock, the trail skirts the shore of Moosehead Lake for 0.8 miles, and through birch and alders you can see Kineo's awesome cliffs. Here the trail splits into 2 separate trails, the Bridle Trail and the Indian Trail. The Bridle Trail, while longer, is the easier of the two. At the summit is a lookout tower, and from there you will see panoramic majestic views.

BAXTER STATE PARK

Baxter State Park is a two hour drive from Seboomook Wilderness Campground. If you plan to hike one of the four trails on Mt. Katahdin, you will need to arrive there very early in the A.M. The four trails are: Owl Trail, Cathedral Trail, Dudley and Knife Edge Trails, and North Basin Cut-Off and North Basin Trail.

From Seboomook Campground: Take a right at our Mobil sign and after 2.5 miles cross Seboomook Dam on your left and continue on that road for 2.5 miles, at the end of the road turn right onto the Golden Road. Drive approximately 68 miles and after the Abol Bridge you will see the sign on the left to Baxter.

GREEN MOUNTAIN

Northwest of Moosehead Lake and a scant 8 miles east of the Canadian border lies the emerald ridge of Green Mountain. There is a hiking trail to the 2,395 foot summit, and you may climb the fire tower to exceptional views all around you. For accurate directions hikers should contact the Maine Forest Service.
